On 2nd May 1945 the vineyards of Bordeaux suffered an unseasonably late frost. The same day, a thousand miles north east, the Battle of Berlin ended, and German troops surrendered to Russian General Zukhov. In Bordeaux the frost lifted, as a long, hot summer began.
